SHRUG comics is a comic book series written by Adriana Hernandez and illustrated by Royce Banuelos detailing events in Adriana's life that show how complicated family dynamics can both be normalized and fucked up at the same time. The series is biographic in nature with a few names, events, and details changed for clarity and convenience to the story.
The topics and family dynamics explored in this series are meant to challenge how we generally view the "American Family" specifically the relationships developed between parents and children. Ms. Hernandez grew up in a household with a physically abusive father and a narcistic mother in an interracial family trying to make ends meet spanning the 80's to the modern 2020's.
Throughout the series we'll explore topics of generational abuse, financial struggle, love, mental anguish, distrust, parenting, 80s pornography, aliens, Shrek, punk rock, and how family means something different for everyone.
Issues will be released in the form of short stories in preparation for a graphic novel that explores the complicated, difficult, and endearing relationship between Ms. Hernandez, her Dad, and the different men in her life who've had the biggest impact.
